Should I File a Claim or Pay Out of Pocket? The Missouri Roof Deductible Math
Missouri wind and hail deductibles have shifted from flat amounts of $1,000 to $2,500 toward percentage-based structures of 1 to 3 percent of your home’s insured value. On a $350,000 home, a 2 percent wind and hail deductible is $7,000. That single change has flipped the math on a large number of roof claims, because the deductible now sometimes exceeds the repair cost entirely. Here is how to run the numbers before you call your carrier.
How Do I Find My Actual Deductible?
Pull your Declarations Page, the one or two page summary at the front of your policy. Look for a separate wind and hail deductible line, which is frequently different from your all-other-perils deductible. If it shows a percentage, multiply it by your dwelling coverage amount, not your home’s market value or purchase price.
| Dwelling Coverage | 1% | 2% | 3% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $250,000 | $2,500 | $5,000 | $7,500 |
| $350,000 | $3,500 | $7,000 | $10,500 |
| $500,000 | $5,000 | $10,000 | $15,000 |
Set that number against a typical St. Louis architectural shingle replacement of $8,500 to $15,000. On a $500,000 home with a 3 percent deductible, the deductible can exceed the entire cost of the roof.
When Does Filing Make Sense?
File when the damage clearly exceeds your deductible by a meaningful margin. A full replacement at $12,000 against a $3,500 deductible nets roughly $8,500 before depreciation. That is worth filing.
File when damage is structural or widespread. Decking rot, multiple slopes affected, or interior water damage push costs well past most deductibles.
File when your policy is replacement cost value and the roof is newer. RCV pays the full cost to replace with new materials, with depreciation released after the work is done. The gap between payout and cost is smallest here.
When Does Paying Out of Pocket Make More Sense?
When the repair is close to or below the deductible. A $2,800 flashing and shingle repair against a $5,000 deductible produces no payout at all, and you have added a claim to your history for nothing.
When your policy has converted to actual cash value. ACV deducts depreciation permanently. On a 20-year-old roof, the payout can be as little as 20 percent of replacement cost. Subtract the deductible from that and the remainder is often negligible.
When you already have recent claims. Claim frequency affects renewal pricing and, increasingly in Missouri, whether you get renewed at all. A marginal claim can cost more across future premiums than it pays today.
Run the Calculation Before You Call
The sequence matters. Get a professional inspection and a written repair or replacement estimate first. Then compare that figure against your deductible and your coverage type. Only then decide whether to file.
This order protects you because under Missouri law an inquiry to your carrier about whether a loss would be covered should not itself be treated as a claim. Even so, the cleanest approach is to know your numbers before you make the call, so that the conversation is a decision rather than a discovery.
| Situation | Likely Better Choice |
|---|---|
| Damage well above deductible, RCV policy, newer roof | File |
| Structural damage or interior water intrusion | File |
| Repair cost near or below deductible | Pay out of pocket |
| ACV policy on a roof past 15-20 years | Usually pay out of pocket or plan replacement |
| Multiple recent claims on your record | Weigh renewal risk carefully |
One Thing That Is Never an Option
A contractor offering to waive, absorb, or pay your deductible is proposing insurance fraud under Missouri law, and it exposes you as well as them. It is also a reliable marker of a dishonest operator, because the money has to come from somewhere, and it comes out of your materials and labor. End that conversation immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a percentage roof deductible?
Multiply the percentage by your dwelling coverage amount, not your home’s market value. A 2 percent wind and hail deductible on $350,000 of dwelling coverage is $7,000. Your Declarations Page shows both the percentage and the dwelling coverage figure, and wind and hail is often separate from your all-other-perils deductible.
Should I file a roof claim if the damage is close to my deductible?
Generally no. If a repair costs $2,800 and your deductible is $5,000, you receive nothing and still have a claim on your record. Claim frequency affects renewal pricing and, increasingly in Missouri, whether you are renewed at all. Get a written estimate first, then compare.
Does asking my insurer a question count as a claim?
An inquiry about whether a loss would be covered should not be treated as a claim. Even so, the safest approach is to get a professional inspection and written estimate before contacting your carrier, so you know your numbers and the conversation is a decision rather than an exploration.
Why did my wind and hail deductible change to a percentage?
Missouri carriers have been shifting from flat wind and hail deductibles of $1,000 to $2,500 toward percentage-based structures of 1 to 3 percent of insured value, driven by rising hail claim severity and material costs. The change usually appears at renewal on your Declarations Page.
Can a roofing contractor pay my deductible?
No. Offering to waive, absorb, or pay your insurance deductible is insurance fraud under Missouri law and exposes both the contractor and the homeowner. It also signals a dishonest operator, since that money is recovered by cutting materials or labor on your roof.
Is it worth filing a claim on an ACV policy?
Often not. Actual cash value deducts depreciation permanently, and on a roof past 15 to 20 years the payout can be a small fraction of replacement cost. After subtracting the deductible the remainder is frequently negligible. In that situation, planning a replacement is usually the better path.
